One might well ask why there exists such an impressive corpus of works by Percy Grainger for wind orchestra, and the answer is simple: the composer very often wrote works with "open" orchestrations – that is, with or without strings, depending on the performers' preference – to say nothing of the many different versions he wrote himself (including many for solo wind instruments) and the shed loads of orchestrations he wrote for works by other composers from Bach to Fauré, from Goossens to William Lawes, from Franck to popular melodies from all over the world. And so it will come as no surprise that this new complete collection contains many discographic world firsts. The Royal Norwegian Navy Band is a world-class outfit – believe us! It brings joy and passion to the performance of these works which showcase each of the band's instruments: note also that the musicians meticulously respect all of Grainger's recommendations and requirements about special instruments.
