The 2014 release of the album Weltentraum marked the birth of a supergroup, bringing together his good friend and compatriot, the German pianist Michael Wollny, Eric Shaefer on drums, and American bassist Tim Lefebvre (known for his collaborations with Wayne Krantz, David Bowie and Elvis Costello). Wollny has truly laid the foundations of a beautifully personal and innovative trio, propelling himself into the small circle of musicians who are likely to breathe new life into this canonical orchestral formula. Eight years after this brilliant trio originally took shape, Ghosts picks up where they left off—even taking things a little further, by making an effort to preserve the band's very specific sound (compact, earthy, ultra-sensory) and the coherence of the repertoire (all the tracks are pretty much directly linked to a ghost story).

In this literally haunted record, the trio explores a series of themes from a wide variety of styles, with a particular focus on the ‘spirit’ that inspires them. There’s everything from pop songs (borrowed from Nick Cave, David Sylvian and Timber Timbre) to Schubert's ‘Erlkönig’; from unique takes on jazz classics (‘I Love You Porgy’ by Nina Simone and ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ by John Coltrane) to the track ‘Willow’s Song’ (taken from the horror thriller Wicker Man); from a cover of a traditional Irish tune (‘She Moved Through the Fair’) to a handful of particularly inspired original compositions (‘Hauntology’, for example, which is one of the highlights of the record and is clearly influenced by Joachim Kuhn). Wollny and his companions have developed an orchestral concept of the trio, creating dense, dark and lyrical music, which is simultaneously contemporary insofar as its rhythms and sonorities. It alludes as much to the dark vein of German Romanticism as it does to the southern tradition of American literature.
