On paper, Blueface makes no sense at all. A promising football player with no interest in making music found himself at a recording studio by chance. On a whim he hopped in the booth and started rapping with a barely on-rhythm flow, and some mystical combination of charisma and eccentricity catapulted him to fame in a matter of months. Underground bangers like "Dead Locs" gave way to chart-topping hits like "Thotiana" and mixtapes went from low-key affairs to big productions with cameos from Cardi B and Offset. Debut studio album Find the Beat follows a series of increasingly strong mixtapes all characterized by Blueface's wobbly meter and his offhandedly casual, effortlessly cool personality. While Find the Beat is a step up in terms of production, instrumentals, and big-name features, it lacks the spontaneous energy of earlier releases. Blueface still makes up for his lack of technical skills with an abundance of punchy lyrical one-liners, and his laid-back delivery is in full effect on tracks like the Gunna-assisted "First Class" and the double-time hooks of "Wire." However, the nearly out-of-breath flows that felt exciting and urgent on early singles feel a little bit more nervous throughout Find the Beat. Polished production along with guest spots from Polo G, DaBaby, Jeremih, and other established stars suggest higher stakes, but Blueface doesn't rise to the occasion on every track. A hooky melody on "Period" is wasted on throwaway lyrics, and confusing filler like "Carne Asada" take away from the album's overall impact. Blueface still has something that's hard to name yet impossible to deny, and he's still rapping unlike any of his peers. The charm that's so key to his success is still there, but his jagged edges and bumpy bars feel more out of place the more he grows into pop stardom.
