Terry Callier's trio of records for Cadet during the early '70s -- Occasional Rain, What Color Is Love, and I Just Can't Help Myself -- were among the most intriguing, refreshing, and neglected work of any R&B or folk artist during the '70s. In yet another case of the title not fitting the collection, Essential: The Very Best Of doesn't collect the best tracks from those records very well, but since over half of these tracks are previously unreleased songs from the period, it makes this of much more interest for fans than anyone else. Only four of the songs here are really Cadet must-haves ("Occasional Rain," "Ordinary Joe," "Dancing Girl," and "Just As Long As We're in Love"), leaving the rest as intriguing curiosities that anyone with a passing interest in Terry Callier should definitely hear.
