The young Turkish guitarist Celil Refik Kaya made a good decision in trying to stand out from the crowd of new players of his instrument by turning to the music of Paraguayan composer Agustín Barrios. Barrios is not exactly neglected, but he has only a few large virtuoso pieces that tend to get played. He makes a stronger impression, however, in large groups of short pieces that produce a kaleidoscopic effect when heard in sequence. Barrios drew on a great variety of musical sources, not only Paraguayan, but from elsewhere in South America, especially Argentina, and Europe, and he seemed to have a virtuoso device that enlivened every humble folk model he used. His music is thus technically difficult but never flashy and always rooted in musical requirements. This fourth volume of Barrios' music has brought Kaya commercial success, and it's easy to see why: it doesn't contain large works like Barrios' La Catedral, the Bachian essay that John Williams used to program, but it has a striking variety of other types, including the marvelously concise Bach homage Estudio in B minor. Consider and sample the final Milonga (Estilo Criollo). You might get a dozen different answers asking South American musicians for a definition of either of those words, but in Barrios' hands what you hear is a piece that elegantly evokes cowboy music without any bit of showiness, and Kaya's controlled reading is a little gem. Elsewhere, there are flamenco-like sounds from Spain's Andalucía, transformed in Barrios' hands, various Paraguayan genres, etudes that always have some point of interest, and much more. Appealing from start to finish; the only disappointment is the hollow church sound, which detracts from the intimacy.
