Bill Evans and Jack DeJohnette would only play together for six months. But the unique official result of their brief collaboration, the live set, At The Montreux Jazz Festival of 15 June 1968 with Eddie Gomez on the double bass, remains a highlight of the pianist's vast discography. With this Another Time: The Hilversum Concert, published by Resonance Records, here is another totally unique recording from this inspired trio, laid down one week after the Montreux performance, in the studios of Dutch radio station NRU. This same label had the smart idea of bringing out, in 2016, Some Other Time: The Lost Session From The Black Forest, other breathtaking and equally unique moments from this trio. Here, the relationship between Evans and his two young bandmates is still stunning. On the solo in Nardis, for example, a composition by Miles Davis that the pianist particularly cherished, a young DeJohnette takes some crazy liberties, which spur on Eddie Gomez. At the end of this live piece, one is left thinking that the DeJohnette/Gomez duo has nothing to envy in the words of Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian, which had come out a few years earlier. We likewise feel with these 1968 recordings that the art of Bill Evans is at every step setting out down new and ever-changing paths. © MD/Qobuz
