To listen to the album In The Silence in January 2014 (a Qobuzissime record!), you would discover a young Icelandic extra-terrestrial named Ásgeir Trausti Einarsson. At the age of just 21, this songwriter who grew up in the wilderness of Laugarbakki as part of a big family of musicians has followed in Bon Iver's footsteps (with a slightly falsetto voice that immediately brings to mind Justin Vernon). A kind of folktronica built on various instruments and electronic sounds, full of airy and melancholic ambiances, his style leans on lyrics taken from poems by his 72-year-old father! The lyrics are translated into English by his collaborator John Grant. An icon for fans back home thanks to his first album Dyrd í dauðathogn which has beaten sales records ever since its 2012 release (and of which In The Silence was the English version), Ásgeir returns with Afterglow in a fusion of dreamy levity (his falsetto still working miracles), folk values and electro sparks. This time it is hard not to be reminded of his relation to the world of Bon Iver, but for this 2017 vintage, it recurs in a form that's sometimes poppy, or even with notes of soul. And if the element of (pleasant) surprise of In The Silence is no longer there, Afterglow still shows the originality of the Icelander's approach, like a very personal re-reading of the Pixies' Where Is My Mind ?. © CM/Qobuz
