Hi-Res Riconoscimenti La discoteca ideale Qobuz - HD Audio
The simple fact of the matter is that, compared with all previous releases of Ashkenazy's stupendous 1974-1975 recordings of Rachmaninov's 24 Preludes, this 96kHz 24-bit remastering is vastly better. Where the original LP release was warm and lush but a tad hazy, and earlier CD releases were warm and lush but a bit hard, this CD release is warm and lush -- but also clear and bright as polished crystal. Thus, while Ashkenazy's luminous lyricism, soulful sensuality, and blazing virtuosity are as manifest as ever -- and few pianists have ever matched him for these qualities in this repertoire -- what had previously seemed like his unfortunate tendency to overpedal in heavier textures is here shown to be a flaw in earlier releases, not his playing. More significantly, the remastering allows the colors and nuances of Ashkenazy's performances to sound more cleanly and accurately. In the hard-charging B flat major Prelude, the delicately radiant G sharp minor Prelude, even the played-to-death C sharp minor Prelude, Ashkenazy's playing seems much more subtle and dazzling -- which, considering his performances have long been considered among the deepest and strongest ever recorded, is quite an achievement. Everyone who treasures Rachmaninov's music should hear this release -- whether they've heard the earlier releases or not. © TiVo

Libretto Riconoscimenti Pianiste Maestro - Choc de Classica
As an advocate for the music of Sergey Rachmaninov, Vladimir Ashkenazy has few equals among contemporary pianists, and his recordings for Decca have been regarded by aficionados and critics alike as essential listening. Because of this, it may come as a surprise that this 2011 album of the Variations on a Theme of Chopin and the Piano Sonata No. 1 in D minor is a first for Ashkenazy, who has never before recorded these early works. Chopin's Prelude in C minor is the subject of the variations, and its brooding tone made it a natural for Rachmaninov, whose music from this period was often cast in the minor mode and heavily inspired by the darker aspects of Romanticism. The Piano Sonata No. 1 has often been overshadowed by the more famous Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, and its fairly loose structure, long displays of virtuosity, and meandering thematic material have made it a difficult piece to pull off convincingly. Ashkenazy is quite efficient and focused in the Chopin Variations, and he makes a fair case for the Piano Sonata, insofar as he gives it a coherent expression, avoids sentimentality, and tightens its form by maintaining the music's momentum. Newcomers to Ashkenazy's Rachmaninov should give the four piano concertos priority, for these recordings with André Previn and the London Symphony Orchesta are landmarks. But more experienced listeners and Rachmaninov fans will find this solo album to be an important discovery, if not exactly a revelation. © TiVo

Hi-Res Libretto Riconoscimenti 5 de Diapason
This very fine recording of chamber music by Shostakovich spans careers, not only that of the composer, but also that of 79-year-old pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy, who played the Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67, for Shostakovich at his home as a young man, but hasn't recorded it until now. There are other strong recordings of this tragic wartime work, which merges the personal and the external in a way that only Shostakovich and Beethoven could do, but sample the heavy, monumental treatment of the slow movement Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67, and you'll find it's Ashkenazy through and through. The program includes the rarely heard Piano Trio No. 1 in C minor, Op. 8, a hotshot bit of formally ingenious, student, late Romanticism that the aging pianist catches perfectly, and the late Viola Sonata, Op. 147, a work that can collapse under its own weight, but that here is charismatic and transcendent. The other players, none of them Russian, adapt with a sure touch to piano-driven performances. A wonderful tribute from one great artist to another who inspired him, beautifully recorded. © TiVo

British composer Howard Blake seems to lead two careers, writing music for films and for the concert hall, yet this division is somewhat arbitrary because so much of his work has crossover appeal. The music for the 1982 film The Snowman, for example, has become one of Blake's most recognizable scores, and its signature song, Walking in the Air, has become a genuine hit, covered by pop and even heavy metal artists. Blake has also written evocative music for the films The Duellists and The Changeling, and their themes are included in this 2014 Decca release by pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy. In many instances, Blake composes in a relaxed contemporary classical style, as in the series of 24 piano pieces in Lifecycle, of which 10 are presented here, including the keyboard version of Walking in the Air. Blake is an unabashed tonalist with a pleasing lyrical gift that makes his music instantly accessible, though its mild harmonies and simple melodies are rarely challenging. However, the Dances for 2 pianos and the Sonata for 2 pianos show more rhythmically active music infused with jazz harmonies, and Ashkenazy's performances with his son, Vovka Ashkenazy, are easily the most entertaining selections of this disc. © TiVo

Vladimir Ashkenazy has turned increasingly often to Bach in his old age, releasing this set of the French Suites for keyboard in the summer of 2017, when he was just turning 80. It makes a good way into his Bach approaches, on a single disc. Ashkenazy avoids monumental Bach, a tendency that works especially well with the French Suites, which are somehow domestic works. Sample one of the outer movements, perhaps the opening movement of the French Suite No. 2 in C minor, BWV 813. Ashkenazy begins circumspectly, offering a tour de force of structure achieved through subtle phrasing and articulation, keeping the tempo steady until, well into the motion toward the central cadences, he allows some rubato. The whole thing is on a slow burn, and he gets excellent engineering support from Decca, working in Hyperion's favorite venues, Suffolk's Potton Hall. It all has the effect of drawing you into a session with an aging master, who will take you an a quiet, deliberate, and often fascinating tour through some familiar works. Those not on board with the old pianistic Bach, and those desiring brilliant dance rhythms in what are after all suites of dances, may not connect with Ashkenazy here, but taken on its own terms, it's a fascinating Bach recording. © TiVo
