Palle Mikkelborg

An introspective Danish trumpeter, flugelhorn player, composer and bandleader, Palle Mikkelborg's style combines cool and bebop, as well as classical influences. Mikkelborg's solos are sometimes brooding, sparse statements, other times lyrical, fleeting phrases. A self-taught player, Mikkelborg's worked with combos, big bands and orchestras. He joined The Danish Radiojazzgruppen in 1963, and served as its leader from 1967 to 1972. Mikkelborg also belonged to The Radioens Big Band from 1964 to 1971, and led it on several occasions. He co-led both The V8 octet and a quintet with Alex Riel that played at the Newport and Montreaux Jazz Festivals in the late '60s and '70s. Mikkelborg headed the group Entrance in the '70s and '80s, and led a trio with Thomas Clausen and Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen in the mid-'80s. He toured and recorded with the big bands of Peter Herbolzheimer and George Grunz, worked with Terje Rypdal and played with Orsted Pedersen and Kenneth Knudsen in the '80s. Mikkelborg's done compositions and arrangements for film, television and radio. He's worked with Abdullah Ibrahim, Jan Garbarek, Gil Evans, Eje Thelin, Karin Krog, and Bill Evans. Mikkelborg's suite "Aura" was part of one of the last enchanting Miles Davis' albums of the '80s. He's recorded for Debut, Metronome, Sonet and ECM. Mikkelborg has sessions available on CD.
