Overcoats

A duo recognized for their rich vocal harmonies, Overcoats' take on indie pop draws on elements of electro-pop, folk, and indie rock. Members Hana Rose Elion and JJ Mitchell delivered their full-length debut, Young, in 2017. Their brasher, empowerment-themed second album, The Fight, arrived in 2020, and 2023's more reflective Winner was informed by a period of loss and upheaval. Based in New York, Overcoats was formed by Elion and Mitchell, one-time college roommates and Wesleyan University graduates, shortly before releasing their eponymous EP in 2015. The resulting buzz led to a variety of music festival appearances and support slots for the likes of SOAK, Maggie Rogers, and Tennis. The group embarked on a headlining tour around the time they released their full-length debut, Young. Co-produced by Nicolas Vernhes (Dirty Projectors, Daughter) and Autre Ne Veut, it arrived on Arts & Crafts in April 2017 and landed in the Top 40 of Billboard's Independent Albums chart. For their second long-player, Overcoats enlisted help from producers Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira, Angel Olsen) and Yves Rothman (Miya Folick, Nasty Cherry). In the meantime, they moved to the Loma Vista label, which issued the sleeker, more assertive The Fight in March 2020. Informed by a period of loss and disruptions that included the COVID-19 pandemic, their next album, April 2023's Winner, took a more reflective tone. It arrived on a different label, Never Fall Back Records/Thirty Tigers.
