Oscar Scheller

A genre-defying singer, songwriter, and producer, Oscar Scheller unites the sounds within his music with his highly personal and relatable viewpoint. On his early singles and 2016's debut album Cut and Paste, he combined Britpop, dub, hip-hop, and synth pop into charming collages. As time went on, however, he became an in-demand producer and songwriter for cutting-edge pop artists and focused on the electro-pop and hip-hop influences of his sound on later releases including 2019's HTTP404 and 2021's Boys Cry. The son of the couple who fronted the '70s new wave band the Regents, Scheller grew up in a musical household in London. Along with absorbing the music his parents played, which ranged from Bach and Blur to Blondie and Nirvana, his mother taught him piano starting at age six, and he began writing his own songs at eight. He studied piano more seriously in high school, and became the only boy to join the gospel choir. Around the same time, he fell in love with '90s East Coast hip-hop and its production techniques, and the music he made during those years reflected those influences as well as indie groups like the Radio Dept. Scheller concentrated on his music career after graduating from art school, writing and recording songs in his childhood bedroom. His debut single, "Never Told You," appeared in April 2013 and won strong reviews for its combination of a looping dance beat with heartbroken lyrics. The following year, he became the first artist signed to Smalltown Supersound's imprint Brown Rice Records, which issued the buoyant single "Sometimes" ahead of May 2014's 146b EP. Named for Scheller's bedroom studio, it expanded on his mix of indie and electronic pop. He then moved to Wichita for the 2015 singles "Daffodil Days," "Beautiful Words," and "Breaking My Phone." For his debut album, he worked with drummer Aramis Gorriette and mixing engineer Ben Baptie, who enhanced the dub elements of the songs' production. The results were Cut and Paste, which Wichita released in May 2016. Scheller toured in support of the album with GIRLI, who appeared on a different version of "Breaking My Phone" that was released that year. After the release of Cut and Paste, Scheller took some time to rethink his career. He established himself as a songwriter and producer, collaborating with artists such as Mabel, Ashnikko, Brooke Candy, and Charli XCX. When he returned to his own music, he took a more independent approach and adopted a new sound. Arriving in October 2019, the self-released HTTP404 dove into synth pop and hip-hop and included cameos from many of his production clients as well as Shura, Kero Kero Bonito's Sarah Bonito, and Tyson McVey. Following more production work on Shygirl's 2020 album ALIAS and Ashnikko's 2021 set Demidevil, Scheller returned in March 2021 with his third full-length, Boys Cry. A set of electro-pop songs exploring male vulnerability, it also featured vocals by MUNA's Katie Gavin. His 2022 track "Hard Being Alive" featured Detroiter Chloe Moriondo, and he followed it with his own guest spot on Tayo Sound's "Two Left Feet."
