Laura Cox

In the space of a decade, Anglo-French guitarist Laura Cox evolved from a teenaged bedroom cover artist to an internationally acclaimed musician, playing hard-rocking blues with a virtuosic mastery of her instrument. Born in 1990 in Paris to a French mother and an English father, Cox came to the axe relatively late, at the age of 14, when her aunt gave her a cheap classical guitar. Although a southpaw, Cox learned to play right-handed. She launched her streaming video channel in 2006, in the early days of the medium, and for seven years played only in her bedroom, beginning with cover versions and graduating to writing and performing her own songs. Having built up a huge following and considerable online acclaim, she played her first show in 2013, forming her eponymous band with guitarist Mathieu Albiac, bassist François Delacoudre (a seasoned session player), and drummer Antonin Guérin. Together they wrote and recorded the albums Hard Blues Shot (2017) and Burning Bright (2019). The band toured Europe and played festivals such as PolandRock and HellFest. After those two records, Albiac departed the band, which Cox decided to treat as an opportunity for more creative freedom. Sequestering herself on the Portuguese coast during COVID-19 lockdowns, she wrote and demoed her third LP entirely alone, experimenting with different instruments like banjo and pedal steel. The result was Head Above Water, released in 2023 by German classic rock giant Ear Music -- a more laid-back record expanding on the bluegrass influence that had briefly reared its head on previous albums.
