Justin Taylor

Justin Taylor is one of France's leading young harpsichordists. He has gained notice both as a soloist and as the leader of the chamber ensemble he founded, Le Consort. Taylor was born in Angers, France, on June 16, 1992. His family background is American. He took up the harpsichord at age ten, making rapid progress and entering the Conservatoire (CNSMDP) in Paris in 2011. He studied harpsichord with Olivier Baumont and Blandine Rannou and piano with Roger Muraro, also taking courses in musical analysis. Things started to happen quickly for Taylor after his graduation in 2015; he won several major prizes, including first prize, the audience prize, and two other honors at the prestigious Musica Antiqua International Competition in Bruges, Belgium. He also formed Le Consort with violinists Théotime Langlois de Swarte and Sophie de Bardonnèche, and Louise Pierrard on viola da gamba. Taylor also won the Alpha Prize Competition mounted by the Alpha label; that win came with the opportunity to record for the label, and he released the album La Famille Forqueray: Portrait(s) in 2016. That album won major French industry prizes, including CHOC of the Year, Gramophone Editor's Choice, and the Grand Prix from the Charles Cros Academy. Taylor has gone on to record exclusively for Alpha. Taylor has appeared at major halls around France and beyond, including the Philharmonie in Paris, the Louvre Auditorium, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, and LSO St Luke's in London. He has collaborated with leading early music groups in addition to Le Consort, including Le Concert de la Loge and Concerto Köln, and has also appeared with modern-instrument orchestras such as the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonie, the Geneva Chamber Orchestra, and the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Taylor's recordings have focused on Baroque music but have been original in conception; his second album was Continuum: Scarlatti, Ligeti. In 2023, Taylor released the album Bach & l'Italie on Alpha.
