Hera Hyesang Park

Soprano Hera Hyesang Park has gained notice not only for her vocal talents but also for a maverick approach to programming. She has released several albums on the major Deutsche Grammophon label. Park was born in South Korea on October 15, 1988. In Korean contexts, her name often appears as Hye-sang Park or Park Hye-sang. She showed talent as a youngster and enrolled for vocal studies at Seoul National University. After graduating, Park moved to the U.S., earning a scholarship to the Juilliard School in Manhattan, New York, and receiving an artist diploma after completing a two-year program in 2015. That year, Park scored a breakthrough when she took second prize in the Operalia Competition organized by tenor Plácido Domingo; she had already won important prizes in South Korea. Admitted to the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Park made her debut at that house in 2017 as the First Wood Sprite in Dvořák's opera Rusalka. Her musical gifts were matched by an instinct for high fashion; Vogue magazine editor-in-chief Dame Anna Wintour selected a Giambattista Valli gown for Park to wear to the Met Gala in New York in 2018. Park returned to the Met in 2019 as Amore in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. That year, she made her recording debut on a live recording of Rossini's Sigismondo with the Munich Radio Symphony Orchestra. Park was signed to Deutsche Grammophon in May 2020 and released the album I Am Hera that year. She has performed in various prestigious settings, singing Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Germany, and appearing in concert with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. She has been especially noted for the content of her recordings, which she chooses based on her own values rather than according to any preexisting career trajectory. She returned in 2024 with the thematic album Breathe, containing works by composers as diverse as Engelbert Humperdinck, Bernat Vivancos, and Hyo-Won Woo.
