Born in London in 1992 to a Caribbean mother and an English father, it wasn't long before Caplen expressed an interest in music. He had already mastered the piano and the cello by his early teens, giving way to an interest in production and remixing. Caplen briefly left England to study in Portland, Oregon, a move which helped to inspire his approach as an artist. In 2014, he self-released his debut EP, Epiphany, gaining the attention of Atlantic Records, which signed him to the label the following year. In 2016, with Atlantic's backing, he readied new material, which emerged in the form of a single, "Longing for You," a feature on his debut EP for Atlantic, Badman. After another year of hard work, 2017 saw Caplen gain significant exposure with three new singles: "Flat Champagne" feat. Ray BLK, "My Hood," and "Two Fingers." Caplen began 2018 by appearing on Rudimental's single "These Days" alongside Jess Glynne and Macklemore. The single "4am," featuring Caitlyn Scarlet, arrived later that winter.
