Black Pumas

Austin's Black Pumas fuse cinematic neo-soul and light psychedelia with a touch of urban grit. Along with garnering a reputation as a hard-hitting live act, the group debuted to acclaim with 2019's Black Pumas, picking up several Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year and Best American Roots Performance. Following the Grammy-nominated Capitol Cuts (Live from Studio A), they delivered their sophomore studio album, 2023's Chronicles of a Diamond. Formed in 2018, Black Pumas is a collaboration between producer and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Quesada and singer/songwriter Eric Burton. Prior to joining forces, Quesada was already known as a Grammy-winning Austin-based producer who had worked with Grupo Fantasma and Brownout. Similarly, Burton had been making the rounds in Austin's singer/songwriter scene since busking his way from Los Angeles in 2015. After being introduced by a mutual friend, it quickly became clear that Burton's dynamic and soulful vocals were a perfect match for the retro-funk- and R&B-flavored tracks Quesada had been working on. Fleshing out their material both in the studio and on-stage during a weekly residency at Austin's C-Boys Heart & Soul Bar, they signed a deal with ATO Records and released a pair of singles, "Black Moon Rising" and "Fire," in early 2019. Their eponymously titled debut, Black Pumas, followed in June of that year, topping Billboard's U.S. Heatseekers chart and helping to earn the duo a handful of Grammy nominations, including for Best New Artist, Record of the Year, and Best American Roots Performance. A deluxe version of their debut appeared in 2020 comprising a second disc full of outtakes, live cuts, and new material. More Grammy nominations followed for 2021's Capitol Cuts (Live from Studio A), which picked up nods for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Album. In 2023, they returned with their second full-length studio album, Chronicles of a Diamond. Produced by Quesada and mixed by Shawn Everett, the album found them further expanding their robust, psych-soul rock with symphonic elements. It reached 69 on the Billboard 200, 14 on both the Top Rock and Independent Albums charts, and picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance for the song "More Than a Love Song."
