Australian duo, An Horse, quickly found an international audience for their fuzzy indie pop, thanks in part to earning a choice 2008 tour support slot in the U.S. opening for Tegan and Sara based solely on their self-released EP. Things moved quickly and they joined the Mom + Pop Records roster for 2009's well-recieved Rearrange Beds and its 2011 follow-up, Walls. After several years of hard touring, An Horse took a break and later reemerged with the 2019 comeback LP, Modern Air. An Horse was originally envisioned as a solo vehicle for former Iron On member Kate Cooper. The project officially became a duo in 2007 after the addition of drummer Damon Cox, who worked alongside Cooper at Skinny's, an independent record store in Brisbane, Australia. The two started writings songs together using the record store as their initial rehearsal space and quickly developing a simple, melodic sound based upon Cox's percussion and Cooper's fuzzed-out guitar. When indie pop stars Tegan and Sara came through town and did an in-store performance at Skinny's, Cooper gave them a rough mix of An Horse's first EP, Not Really Scared, and were suprised when the Canadian duo subsequently asked them to join their 2008 American tour. The self-released EP coupled with the touring slot for an already hot act helped An Horse catch fire, and their popularity in both Australia (where they toured with Death Cab for Cutie) and the United States helped drum up anticipation for the band's full-length debut. Released in March 2009 buy Canadian indie Mom + Pop Records, Rearrange Beds was followed 12 months later by a remix album. After touring in support of both releases, An Horse took a brief break to recharge, with Cooper returning home to Montreal and Cox settling in Melbourne. They reconvened in Vancouver later that year and entered the recording studio with Howard Redekopp, who had mixed Rearrange Beds. The resulting album, Walls, was released in April 2011 and they spent the next year touring in support and making festival appearances at Lollapalooza, SXSW, and Rolling Stone Weekender. After wrapping up the tour cycle, An Horse went on hiatus during which time Cooper released an eponymous 2015 solo album simply titled Cooper. After reuniting in early 2018, An Horse joined the Front Bottoms for a U.S. tour and released a single called "Get Out Somehow." They signed with American label, Lame-O-Records, and in May 2019 released their long-awaited third album, Modern Air. ~ Chris True
