Julia Bardo

As Julia Bardo, Giulia Bonometti makes melancholy indie pop with a retro folk-rock temperament. Following a pair of well-received EPs, she released her isolation-themed full-length debut, Bauhaus, L'Appartamento, in 2021. Born in Brescia, Italy and based in the U.K., Bonometti co-founded angular post-punk outfit Working Men's Club in Todmorden, England as a teen in 2018. With Bonometti playing guitar alongside vocalist/guitarist Sydney Minsky-Sargeant and drummer Jake Bogacki, the trio delivered the single "Bad Blood" in 2019 and were quickly signed to Heavenly Records. Minsky-Sargeant then made clear his intention to shift toward a more electronic, synth-heavy sound, and the other two members left the band, with Bonometti concentrating on her solo project. She debuted the Julia Bardo alias in March 2020 with the four-song Phase, a set of forlorn, 1960s-shaded folk-rock tunes arranged for a full band. It was co-produced by Bardo and Henry Carlyle Wade, who played guitar, keys, and bass on the EP. Wade also recorded three covers issued by Bardo later the same year as The Raw EP. It featured songs originally by Silver Jews, Fleetwood Mac, and LCD Soundsystem. Her first full-length release was the product of months spent in lockdown in Manchester during early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Topics such as loneliness, self-doubt, and homesickness pervade September 2021's Bauhaus, L'Appartamento, her Wichita Recordings debut. The album was recorded on tape in Greenwich, England with her band and producer Euan Hinshelwood (Younghusband).
