Non c’è bisogno di attingere alla stessa fonte o di cucinare insieme per apprezzarsi… Ne è la prova questo incontro tra una regina idolatrata della country alternativa è un vecchio saggio onorato del jazz moderno: Lucinda Williams e Charles Lloyd, coppia effimera, affiancata da un casting a cinque stelle di musicisti tra i quali troviamo il chitarrista Bill Frisell, il maestro del pedal steel Greg Leisz, il bassista Reuben Rogers e il batterista Eric Harland… In passato, entrambi hanno fatto la rivoluzione in casa propria. Ma qui, il tandem non ha altra intenzione se non quella di esaltare una certa idea dell’America con un repertorio aperto. Un menù eteroclita che coniuga jazz, blues, country e rock’n’roll, dato che Lucinda canta soltanto sulla metà dei dieci brani. Vanished Gardens propongono tanto pezzi di Jimi Hendrix (Angel) che di Thelonious Monk (Monk’s Mood), di Roberta Flack (Ballad of The Sad Young Men) ma anche brani propri (tre di Charles Lloyd, quattro di Lucinda Williams).
