On this early-aughts debut, English trio Ilya creates a fantasy land of lush cabaret-pop that sounds like the coolest-of-the-cool blend of James Bond themes, trip-hop beats, vintage European vocal pop, and piano lounge music. Think Shirley Bassey and Portishead's Beth Gibbons taking turns on tracks by Goldfrapp and Air. The songs on They Died for Beauty are as grand and dramatic as the title suggests, swelling with horns, theatrical orchestration, and smooth production. Best known as the album that spawned the luscious one "hit" wonder "Bellissimo" (which garnered attention in the U.S. -- where they were marketed as San Ilya -- in a makeup commercial), They Died for Beauty is an underrated beauty and hidden gem.
