Come può la musica tradurre l’idea di un elemento naturale come l’acqua? Un certo Claude Debussy si era già interesso alla questione, ma Alexandre Desplat ha scelto un’estetica diversa da quella del suo predecessore – anche se, come già in Debussy, i timbri sono al cuore dell’idea di Desplat. Per questa favola di Guillermo Del Toro che narra la storia d’amore tra una ragazza muta, Elisa (Sally Hawkins), e un uomo anfibio (Doug Jones), Desplat ha inserito non meno di dodici flauti nella mitica London Symphony Orchestra – flauti contralto, flauti bassi, flauti traversi. La partitura comporta pochissimi ottoni, e sono soprattutto gli archi e i fiati a suggerire l’incresparsi e lo scorrere dell’acqua. A ciò si aggiunge la delicatezza di strumenti quali il piano, l’arpa e il vibrafono, che rafforzano tale idea. A partire da questo canovaccio orchestrale poco comune, Alexandre Desplat innesta temi e atmosfere diverse. Così, i titoli di testa sono interpretati da un assolo di flauto (eseguito dal compositore in persona), che rappresenta la «voce» della giovane protagonista. Quanto al bandoneón (che invece simboleggia l’anfibio), esso sottolinea l’aspetto onirico delle immagini con il suo suono dolce e sensuale. Questi due strumenti evolvono insieme con grazia, proprio come i due protagonisti del film, eroi atipici che sognano di essere le star di un musical hollywoodiano. Perché, al di là del suo copione non convenzionale, La forma dell’acqua è innanzitutto un omaggio al cinema, e principalmente al cinema classico americano. Per tutta la colonna sonora, infatti, persiste tenace quel sentimento di nostalgia, come suggerisce d’altronde la scelta di mettere in risalto certe percussioni sud-americane (bongo, conga…), evocatrici di tanti film degli anni ’50 e ’60 (ricordiamo L’infernale Quinlan, diretto da Orson Welles e musicato da Henry Mancini). Per i titoli di coda, invece, in pendant con il soggetto del film, Alexandre Desplat gioca la carta del crossover rivolgendosi alla soprano Renée Fleming per interpretare un arrangiamento inedito di un classico del jazz anni ’40, You’ll Never Know. Sottolineiamo infine che con La forma dell’acqua Alexandre Desplat ha vinto il suo secondo Oscar, tre anni dopo The Grand Budapest Hotel di Wes Anderson. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
