Quando i nomi di Miles Davis e di John Coltrane compaiono sullo stesso manifesto, il brivido è lì a portata di mano. Con questo sesto volume delle Bootleg Series del trombettiere, si trasforma persino – dolce eufemismo – in estasi. The Final Tour si concentra sull’ultimo capitolo della collaborazione tra Miles e Coltrane. Per quattro CD, riunisce performances registrate durante la loro tournée européa del 1960, l’ultima insieme prima della morte del sassofonista nel luglio 1967, di cui fanno parte i due concerti all’Olympia di Paris il 21 marzo 1960, i due del 22 marzo a Stoccolma e quello del 24 marzo a Copenaghen, il tutto disponibile per la prima volta a partire da nastri analogici da ¼ di pollice.

I cinque concerti si tengono solo un anno dopo l’uscita del capolavoro Kind Of Blue, che ha dato uno scossone piuttosto violento al mondo del jazz. La potenza nucleare creativa dei protagonisti è tale che, in ogni attimo, il quintetto è sul punto di implodere. Con il pianista Wynton Kelly, il contrabbassista Paul Chambers e il batterista Jimmy Cobb, Miles e Trane prorompono in improvvisazioni torrenziali in cui, a saltare all’orecchio, sono sia la fusione sia l’opposizione. Ma miracolosamente tutto funziona bene, e niente stona. Anzi! È questo che fa la magia di questi cinque concerti: sentire nello stesso momento l’individualismo dei giganti e la loro capacità di tenersi per mano per ruggire all’unisono.

Dal punto di vista del repertorio, questo cofanetto è una specie di nirvana davisiano che comprende i più grandi temi (non sempre di sua composizione) che ne hanno decretato il successo: ’Round Midnight, Bye Bye Blackbird, On Green Dolphin Street, Walkin’, All Of You, Oleo, So What e All Blues… E la conclusione di The Final Tour si conclude con una stupefacente intervista rilasciata da Coltrane al DJ svedese Carl-Erik Lindgren. «Sei arrabbiato?», gli chiede questo. «No, risponde Trane. Spiegavo poco tempo fa a un mio amico che il motivo per cui faccio così tanti suoni – ed è per questo che può sembrare rabbia – è che sto provando a dire un mucchio di cose contemporaneamente.
