Come suggerisce il titolo, Tea For The Tillerman 2 è la seconda versione del classico folk-rock di Cat Stevens del 1970, Tea For The Tillerman. Negli anni ’60, questo album è stato come un’ossessione. le canzoni di questo disco scorrevano, in un misto di eleganza strumentale e profondo disincanto, nella camera da letto di ogni adolescente, che cercava di carpire i misteri del disco e delle sue chitarre acustiche. Quest’opera è come un rifugio spirituale. Dalle questioni politiche, dalle luci del mondo moderno. Qualche anno dopo, Cat Stevens si convertirà all’islam, diventerà Yusuf Islam e si allontanerà dal mondo del pop per quasi 30 anni. A metà degli anni 2000 ha fatto il suo ritorno, e oggi celebra l’anniversario del suo album. Sì, Tea For The Tillerman ha 50 anni. E Cat Stevens ne ha 72. Piuttosto che rilanciare questo vecchio classico ristampandolo assieme a b-sides o outtakes, lo ha completamente ri-registrato, ed è la miglior cura per la giovinezza del cantante londinese. Con il suo chitarrista e produttore dell’epoca, nonché un gruppo di nuovi musicisti, Cat / Yusuf ritrova la sottile e inquieta morbidezza della versione dell’epoca. E aggiunge quella pienezza e leggera dose di vigore che a volte mancavano. Le nuove versioni dei brani sono piuttosto vicine agli originali (con gli stessi arrangiamenti di archi e i cori), mentre alcune sono più distanti (con un sapore funky e il rap di Brother Ali su Longer Boats), ma mai snaturate. Ma soprattutto, Cat Stevens canta anche meglio del solito: la sua voce non è invecchiata, anzi: sembra essersi liberata dall’ombra di Dylan che potevamo sentire sul Tea For The Tillerman del 1970. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
