Si sarebbe dovuto aspettare fino al 1988 prima che Keith Richards, allora 45enne, si lanci in una carriera da solista. Mick Jagger l’aveva preceduto nel 1985 con She's the Boss e nel 1987 con Primitive Cool, due album che avevano riscontrato un piccolo successo commerciale ma che la grande storia del rock’n’roll ha leggermente dimenticato. Meno adatto al grande pubblico, Talk Is Cheap è evidentemente più rock’n’roll. Il riff umano mostra le sue competenze binarie su canzoni piuttosto laid back, sostenuto da Steve Jordan alla batteria e Charley Drayton al basso. Tra rock stonesiano classico, vecchio boogie vintage, effluvi neworleanesi e blues sporco, Richards è più un esperto di atmosfere che di canzoni vere e proprie. Perciò, questo primo album da solista assomiglia prima di tutto a una piacevole e enorme jam session tra amici. Gli amici sono Ivan Neville (pianoforte), Bobby Keys (sax), Waddy Wachtel (chitarra), Bootsy Collins (basso), Chuck Leavell (tastiere), Maceo Parker (sassofono), Mick Taylor (chitarre), Bernie Worrell (tastiere) e Willie Mitchell. Alla fine, senza la sua eterna metà, Keith Richards se la cava abbastanza bene. Il che non gli impedirà di ritrovarla, un anno dopo, con l’album Steel Wheels… © Max Dembo/Qobuz
