Ricordiamo che nel 2013 abbiamo accolto con un certo stupore l’alleanza tra El-P – portavoce del rap indipendente newyorkese (con Company Flow, e anche come solista e alla guida dell’etichetta Definitive Jux) – e Killer Mike, un solido street-rapper di Atlanta salito alla ribalta con gli Outkast. 7 anni e 3 album in comune più tardi sotto il nome di Run The Jewels, è ormai chiaro che il duo sia diventato non solo inseparabile (e quasi esclusivo), ma anche una band essenziale nel panorama rap contemporaneo.
Su RTJ4, i due quarantenni continuano a portare la fiaccola di un rap di un rap combattivo ed impegnato, ereditato dai Public Enemy. Ma se l’influenza della Bomb Squad, che si poteva percepire già nelle loro prime produzioni a metà degli anni ’90, è ora più palpabile che mai, è in quest’album che El-P innesca la sua rivoluzione sonora e dà fuoco a tutte le polveri: campionando il gruppo post-punk Gang of Four (con the ground below), sottolineando i ritmi dub (in holy calamafuck, coprodotto da Dave Sitek di TV On The Radio), registrando il sassofonista nativo americano Cochemea (su a few words for the firing squad (radiation)) e riunendo personalità diverse come Pharell Williams, Zack de la Rocha, Josh Homme, Mavis Staples e DJ Premier.
Volubili, ma senza mai perdersi in chiacchiere, i due rapper si completano a vicenda – nei loro timbri, nel loro flow e nella loro scrittura – in modo impressionante. El-P ha conservato un gusto e un talento per le rime labirintiche dall’epoca d’oro del rap indie, e Killer Mike, che nel mondo civile è diventato una delle voci principali della sinistra americana al fianco di Bernie Sanders, è riuscito nell’impresa di rimettere il contenuto sociale nel cuore del rap.
