After working with the like of Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, MØ and Camila Cabello, Cashmere Cat stays true to his name and continues with the feline theme from behind the microphone on his new album, released about two years after his first long format, 9. The somewhat reclusive Norwegian producer, whose list of collabs (Wiz Khalifa, Major Lazer, The Weeknd) has gotten a lot longer since his breakout in 2012 with the track Mirror Maru, has decided for this project to express himself through an alter ego, Princess Catgirl. “She’s very cute and powerful, he explains. I’ve always been shy: since the beginning of being an artist, I would hide my face, not want to do interviews, hide behind other artists. I guess you could say I was scared. So I created Princess Catgirl to be the face of my music. She makes me feel safe.”
That hasn’t stopped him getting help from a range of different producers (and friends): Francis And The Lights (Kanye West, Drake), Benny Blanco (who has produced for pop legends such as Ke$ha, Britney Spears and Katy Perry) and SOPHIE all lend their talents to this album of rare brevity (seven tracks, nearly none of which are longer than three minutes), with vocoder ballads and lo-fi synths which come together to create this forward-looking pop. In 20 years, when we’re singing the praises of avatars performing on stage, we’ll have Cashmere Cat to thank. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
