Little is known about the life of Pérotin le Grand, except that he was one of the greatest representatives of the Notre-Dame school around 1200 and is considered one of the main founders of Western polyphonic music. More than anyone else, his music blends in with the austere stone of the gothic cathedrals, particularly that of the Notre-Dame de Paris. It was Pérotin and a few others who gradually freed themselves from the monody of Gregorian song by inventing the combination of several melodies, sung or played at the same time.

Founded in England in 1973 by three singers, the Hilliard Ensemble took the name of an Elizabethan miniaturist painter to devote themselves to medieval and Renaissance music. The records they made much later for ECM soon became legendary, such as the highly acclaimed Officium, with Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek, which became one of the best-selling titles in the catalogue of this demanding high-end label.

With their two albums dedicated to Pérotin le Grand, published in 1988 and 1989, the Hilliard Ensemble has set a sort of benchmark for the interpretation of music that is far removed from us and that fascinates our ears in the way that it combines dissonances, perceived as perfectly normal at the time, with a sort of mystical ecstasy that matches our admiration for the audacious Gothic architecture that is taking over the sky. In their interpretation, this clever music becomes almost therapeutic in its great incantatory and calming power. © François Hudry/Qobuz
