Dopo le composizioni per pianoforte Piano & A Microfono 1983, uscite nel 2018, ecco un secondo album postumo di Prince. Concentrato sul periodo 1981-1991, un decennio prolifico per il cantante, che gli permette in questo modo di mantenere una bella unità produttiva, Originals è costituito principalmente da registrazioni scritte per altri. Roger Nelson era soprattutto un artista camaleontico ultracompleto, che sapeva suonare tutti gli strumenti di Purple Rain, ma anche esibirsi sul palco come il suo idolo James Brown o scrivere tonnellate di composizioni per lui e per “la galassia Prince”, composta da interpreti eccezionali. Tra i suoi 15 brani, troviamo The Glamourous Life per Sheila E, il Manic Monday dei Bangles. Love Thy Will Be Done di Martika o You're My Love del crooner country Kenny Rogers. Originals contiene preziosi inediti semplicemente restaurati e permette di intrufolarsi dietro le quinte quando il maestro sviluppava le migliori melodie nel suo laboratorio e le interpretava senza sapere davvero cosa sarebbero diventate, con brio.
