Composer Robert Livingston and librettist Herschel Garfein had begun planning an opera based on Sinclair Lewis' Elmer Gantry in 1990. Nashville Opera presented the premiere in 2007, and since then it has been presented by several companies including the opera programs at the University of Houston and the University of Minnesota and at Florentine Opera in Milwaukee. This live Naxos recording comes from the performances at Florentine Opera in 2010. William Boggs leads the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Florentine Opera Chorus, with baritone Keith Phares, mezzo-soprano Patricia Risley, tenors Vale Rideout and Frank Kelley, and soprano Heather Buck taking the lead roles.

Le sinfonie elettroniche di Mason Bates

Come, non conoscete (ancora) Mason Bates? Eppure è uno dei nomi più presenti sulla scena nordamericana. Nato nel 1977, Bates è insieme compositore (soprattutto sinfonista e lirico) e DJ di musica elettronica (con lo pseudonimo DJ Masonic): due poli apparentemente opposti, che lui invece si delizia particolarmente a mescolare. Circa metà della sua opera sinfonica e lirica include, in un modo o nell’altro, sonorità elettroniche, perlopiù suoni “di tutti i giorni”, preregistrati e restituiti in tempo reale in base alla partitura. In occasione dell’uscita della sua fantastica opera The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, Qobuz si è intrattenuto con questo personaggio fuori dai canoni.

Gounod romantico e mistico

Artefice principale del rinnovamento della musica francese nella seconda metà del XIX secolo accanto al suo predecessore Berlioz, che ammirava, ed ai suoi allievi Bizet, Saint-Saëns, Massenet, i quali veneravano la sua fede nell’Arte, Charles Gounod (1818-1893), mistico ed incantatore, romantico alla ricerca di un nuovo classicismo, deve la propria fama ad alcuni capolavori che ne sminuiscono il calibro. Una discografia in pieno sviluppo permette di scoprirne la musica nella sua diversità: strumentale, vocale, sacra e lirica.
