Mentre il pianeta si nasconde dalla luce a causa del lockdown, lo stesso fa Lana Del Rey. Per il suo settimo album, la newyorkese di Los Angeles opta per un'intimità sussurrata, accompagnata da melodie sensuali e arrangiamenti da confessionale. Con Chemtrails Over the Country Club, il suo pop lascia spazio al folk molto più che in passato, anche se la sua voce, sensuale e ipnotica come sempre, è avviluppata in echi e riverberi che la collocano lassù, oltre i cumulonembi. Il linguaggio folk la affascina al punto che, con l'aiuto di Natalie Mering - aka Weyes Blood - e Zella Day, chiude il suo disco con una magnifica cover di For Free di Joni Mitchell, tratta dall'album Ladies of the Canyon del 1970. Ritroviamo lo stile anni '70 di Laurel Canyon anche nelle chitarre di Not All Who Wander Are Lost e in quelle che aprono Yosemite. Come al solito, Lana Del Rey tira fuori la sua penna per lanciare le sue stoccate contro lo star system: in White Dress, che apre l'album, rimpiange i bei vecchi tempi in cui era una barista sconosciuta e ascoltava Sun Ra, Kings of Leon e White Stripes “when they were white hot”. Più avanti, prosegue con i riferimenti alla storia della musica, come in Breaking Up Slowly (in duetto con Nikki Lane), dove cita le bufere coniugali tra le due leggende della musica country, Tammy Wynette e George Jones. Canzone dopo canzone, avanza come un'amazzone solitaria, senza sposare nessuna causa in particolare, nessuna lotta, libera di scegliere e di fare quello che vuole (“Well, I don't care what they think. Drag racing my little red sports car. I'm not unhinged or unhappy, I'm just wild”). Chemtrails Over the Country Club dimostra soprattutto quanto Lana eccella nell'arte di raccontare storie, maneggiando con precisione e cura ogni dettaglio dei suoi testi. A 35 anni, Lana Del Rey ha senza dubbio firmato il suo album più libero e completo.
