Un anno dopo la collaborazione tra Roger Vadim e John Lewis del Modern Jazz Quartet (per il film Un colpo da due miliardi), tocca all’allora venticinquenne Louis Malle rivolgersi a un colosso del jazz americano per comporre la colonna sonora originale di un film francese. È su iniziativa del produttore Marcel Romano che il trombettista vola in Europa per partecipare a una serie di concerti. Secondo alcuni, sarebbe stata Juliette Gréco a presentare Miles Davis al regista… secondo altri, si sarebbero conosciuti all’aeroporto al suo arrivo a Parigi. Comunque sia, i due uomini si mettono rapidamente d’accordo sul modo quanto meno originale di procedere per la colonna sonora di Ascenseur pour l’échafaud (Ascensore per il patibolo in italiano): Davis e i suoi quattro musicisti improvviseranno dinanzi alle immagini proiettate nello studio Le Poste Parisien, in una notte di dicembre. Una volta uscito il film, il disco omonimo viene commercializzato sotto l’etichetta Fontana e la musica di Miles Davis diventa un punto di riferimento in materia di musica per il cinema, in un’epoca in cui erano soprattutto i compositori detti classici a regnare nel campo.
In questa nuova edizione ritroviamo tutta la magia dell’interpretazione tragica e nebulosa del trombettista, su composizioni dalle armonie in fondo molto semplici. Chi non ha in mente l’impressionante scalata cromatica che introduce il tema principale (Générique)? Certo, Miles Davis traduce con la sua musica tutta la cupezza e la malinconia della trama ma, al tempo stesso, se ne distacca di tanto in tanto, senza voler a tutti costi aderire al ritmo o al tono delle immagini. Si prenda ad esempio il brano Dîner au motel, la cui follia frenetica rispecchia più il panico interiore dei due giovani personaggi che la situazione piuttosto banale e sorridente a cui assiste lo spettatore. Questo disco ci regala inoltre un inedito, L’interrogatoire de Julien, splendido brano di oltre cinque minuti caratterizzato da un dialogo etereo e teso al tempo stesso tra dei cimbali (Kenny Clarke alla batteria) e un pianoforte (suonato da René Urtreger). Una sobrietà orchestrale che riflette la semplicità del set: Louis Malle ha difatti scelto uno sfondo tutto nero per dipingere questa scena che vede riuniti Maurice Ronet, Lino Ventura e Charles Denner. Ma la musica di Miles Davis è famosa soprattutto per i passaggi in cui Jeanne Moreau erra per le vie di Parigi in cerca del suo amante perduto (Florence sur les Champs-Elysées). Come in una canzone, questa musica tipo nenia accompagna intimamente non solo l’immagine ma anche la voce fuori campo dell’attrice, allora all’apice della sua bellezza e del suo talento. Da notare che Louis Malle ritenterà un simile esperimento jazzistico e improvvisato trent’anni più tardi con Stéphane Grapelli, incaricato di comporre la musica del film Milou a maggio. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
