Che Leonard Cohen continui a essere una fonte d’ispirazione non stupisce più di tanto. Battezzando il suo album Anthem, dal titolo di una canzone del cantautore canadese, Madeleine Peyroux gioca a carte scoperte. C’è forse la volontà di allontanarsi sempre di più dal fantasma di Billie Holiday alla quale la si è spesso paragonata… Anche perché nel 2018, Madeline Peyroux è Madeleine Peyroux! Stile, voce, scrittura, non c’è un aspetto della sua arte che non padroneggi e non le resta che dimostrarlo. Stavolta, mette via le cover e offre nuove canzoni scritte da sola o a quattro mani con Patrick Warren (Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen), Brian MacLeod (Leonard Cohen, Tina Turner), David Baerwald (Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow) e il produttore Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin, Herbie Hancock). Testi spesso impegnati che ella avvolge in musiche dolci per non dire apertamente malinconiche. Tutto in questo disco è come impalpabile. Sia gli arrangiamenti che la produzione hanno la consistenza del velluto e persino quando affronta la potente poesia di Paul Eluard Liberté, la Peyroux lo fa con una delicatezza che rende le parole ancora più pregnanti. Come spesso accade nella sua musica, i confini tra jazz, pop, soul, blues e folk sono sapientemente offuscati.
