Peccato ridurre Tamino-Amir Moharam Fouad a un semplice erede di Jeff Buckley circondato dai Radiohead degli esordi. Soprattutto perché il cantautore belga di soli 21 anni offre molto di più di tutto questo nel suo primo album; anche se è vero che Colin Greenwood, bassista del gruppo britannico, partecipa al disco… Tamino, nato a Anversa affascinato da John Lennon, ha sempre serbato in un angolo della sua testa, sotto quella capigliatura nero corvino, le sue origini egiziane. E la musica araba che sua madre ascoltava in casa era ancora più significativa e intensa quando si trattava dell’opera di Muharram Fouad, suo nonno cantante e attore, una star nel Cairo degli anni ’60… Questo ecclettismo è al centro della musica di Tamino che deve tanto al folk di Buckley, alla pop dei Beatles e perfino alla malinconia nonchalante di Leonard Cohen, un altro dei suoi idoli. Ma per assodare queste influenze disparate, il giovane tenebroso possiede un’arma fatale: la voce. Un organo anch’esso plurale, capace tanto di distendersi in lentezza quanto di trasformarsi in falsetto commovente, tecnica impressionante di cui non abusa mai tra l’altro. È questo canto a trasformare Amir in un lungo romanzo straziante. Un racconto di formazione che alterna il sognante (l’epurato folk di Verses) e il lirico come in So It Goes, Each Time e Intervals costruiti su una sessione di corde arabeggianti.
