Billie Holiday has never been equalled. With the blues in her soul, a broken heart and health issues throughout her life, she remains to this day - more than 100 years after her birth - the voice of the perfect, painstaking ballad.Photo © Universal Music

Billie Holiday, the Dark Blues

by Marc Zisman

A soul drenched in blues, a broken heart and a battered body, Billie Holiday is still the ultimate representation of silk-laced suffering. A century after her birth, Lady Day is still undeniably the most iconic singer in the history of jazz music.

In the end, the familiar labels of emotion and enchanting beauty seemed to have been assigned to the songbook of Billie Holiday, who was more of a blues artist than jazz… In her recordings for the Verve record label (the sublime Lady Sings The Blues in 1956, Songs for Distingué Lovers in 1957, and the controversial Lady In Satin in 1958 in which her voice is already beginning to wane), she reaches the peak of emotion, between pure passion and intense suffering. Silence fell on the 17th of July 1959, as Billie Holiday was finally able to rest in peace.
