About Playlist

When he was discovered in 1968, laying his nonchalant flow on King Tubby's dubs, U-Roy was the new attraction in Jamaican music. With his first hit Wake the Town in 1970, he imposed a new style on Kingston soundsystems, which consisted of picking up local hits and talking over the beats and around the choruses… This would inspire the birth of rap a few years later. His most notable work was on the Wailers' Soul Rebel, which he transformed into Natty Rebel, which would become his greatest hit to date. He also reworked countless other songs by local reggae stars such as Johnny Clarke, Gregory Isaac, Israel Vibration or The Paragon. With a voice that has remained as vibrant on stage as ever in recent years, the man nicknamed The Originator passed away on 17th February 2021 at the age of 78, leaving an immeasurable legacy that is summarised in this playlist.
