About Playlist
The story of Relapse Records is the sort of unicorn tale that prospective DIY label owners fantasize about. In 1990, Matthew F. Jacobson formed the company in his parent’s basement to put out a couple EPs by no-name bands, and within a year, after releasing records by death metal upstarts Suffocation, Incantation, and Deceased, the label had its own office in Pennsylvania. After partnering up with Bill Yurkiewicz, who fronted the grindcore band Exit-13, Relapse expanded and quickly became one of the premier extreme music labels in North America. By the end of the decade, it was a household name, and today it remains one of the most essential and consistently influential metal labels in the world.
What’s important to understand about Relapse is that they somehow never miss. Nearly every record they’ve ever put out is at least great, and most of them are spectacular pillars of their respective genres. They’ve platformed some of the most crucial grindcore bands (Pig Destroyer, Nasum, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Brutal Truth), some of the gnarliest death metal groups, (Dying Fetus, Exhumed, Necrophagist, Nile), and have launched the most iconic sludge/stoner metal acts of the 21st century (Mastodon, High On Fire, Baroness). Although they’ve always been known for being a grind and death metal powerhouse, they’re also the imprint behind revolutionary experimentalists like Neurosis, Amorphis, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Today Is The Day, and Carbomb.
In the 2010s, Relapse not only nabbed contemporary legends like Full of Hell and Gatecreeper, but expanded into heavy shoegaze with bands like Nothing, Cloakroom, and the doom-gazey True Widow. It’s impossible to be comprehensive and digestible for a label this storied, but this 30-song introduction will take you from their preternatural origins to their present-day ear for unparalleled decimation.
