George Jones, the Rolls of country music

by Marc Zisman

Icon of the American West venerated by Dylan, Sinatra, Costello and thousands of others, George Jones could hypnotise the nation's homes by singing a microwave instruction manual. We take a look at the great country crooner who left us in 2013.

He returned in 1978 with several successes: a cover of Maybellene by Chuck Berry with Johnny Paycheck and Bartender's Blues as a duet with James Taylor. This latter can be found on My Very Special Guests, a charming record which is made up exclusively of duets with singers including, in particular, Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Pop and Mavis Staples, Linda Ronstadt and Elvis Costello. In defiance of his doctors' advice, George Jones wouldn't give up drinking, and even quit a rehab programme after just one month. But the following year, he released one of his masterpieces, a new number 1, the poignant ballad He Stopped Loving Her Today, from the album I Am What I Am, and the biggest seller of his career. He continued to record hits until 1986. But the successes didn't change his daily behaviour, which always remained just as out of control.

Thanks to his fourth wife, Nancy Sepulvado, who he married in March 1983, George Jones finally managed to overcome his addictions. But from 1987, his music lost the country audience, which was turning much more towards Randy Travis, Keith Whitley and Dwight Yoakam. Nevertheless, the Possum would continue to record, bringing out One Woman Man in 1988 (his last work with Billy Sherryll and the Epic label), And Along Came Jones in 1991, a further collection of duets with Tammy Wynette four years later, It Don't Get Any Better Than This in 1998, and so on. A serious car accident in 1999 revealed that Jones had started drinking again, but other records – often very autobiographical – would still follow, until the end of his life. That came at the age of 81. The singer took his final bow on 26 April 2013 in Nashville, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, leaving behind him several masterpieces in a genre over which he had reigned as one of its most mercurial monarchs.
