Trip Hop in 10 Albums

by Marc Zisman

At the dawn of the 90s the trip hop wave flooded Great Britain with electro influenced by Jamaican music and rap beats. With dreamy rhythms and oppressive atmospheres, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and various others invented a futuristic kind of dark soul music which was sometimes very cinematographic. Time to zoom in on 10 albums from a genre with a fuzzy outline but a very clear influence.

DJ Shadow – Endtroducing..... (1996)
When Endtroducing….. appeared at the end of 1996, the golden age of rap was over and the genre had begun to reach the wider public. Trip hop too had shaken up the approach of DJs and producers alike with its obscure samples, hip-hop beats and cinemascope atmospheres. It seems that Josh Davies, a 24-year-old Californian DJ, is the offspring of this culture and he both revolutionized and merged the techniques by building his album exclusively from samples. Armed with an MPC60 and two turntables, DJ Shadow revealed an XXL collage that is extremely fascinating and rich in all possible and imaginable musical genres. Throughout Endtroducing....., we find Stanley Clarke, the Beastie BoysMetallicaDon CovayAlan Parsons ProjectGiorgio MoroderT. RexThe Isley BrothersMeredith MonkFunkadelicDavid Axelrod and even Pink Floyd. But Shadow's strength lies in the narrative power of his instrumental collages. Through the virtuosity of his golden touch and the intelligence of his arrangements, the Californian succeeded in writing his own music and invented instrumental hip-hop with electronic flashes.

Archive – Londinium (1996)
The blurred boundaries of trip hop were established first by Massive Attack, then Portishead and finally Archive. A bronze medal that never stopped the group from Clapham not only from equalling their predecessors but also from standing out from them. With less of an oppressive atmosphere, Archive imposed a sound that was more open to other genres. Backed by the sensual and sweet voice of the Iranian Roya Arab and Rosko John’s rapping, Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths wove the fabric of a dreamlike soul into suitably cottony hip-hop beats. With Karl Hyde from Underworld on the guitar for four of the tracks and Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine behind the mixing desk, the instrumentation brings a powerful humanity to the atmosphere of this melancholy record (the guitar on Headscape). And when rapping takes the spotlight (So Few Words, Darkroom) and the sound becomes less torpid, Archive don’t lose their soul, in fact, they do quite the opposite.

Morcheeba – Big Calm (1998)
It’s impossible to listen to Morcheeba’s post-modern soul without a flurry of images coming to mind… Two years after Who Can You Trust?, the group from London released their second album in March ‘98, and it was teeming with new ideas. Morcheeba did everything they could to peel the trip hop sticker off their back. The music on Big Calm explores new horizons, be it pop (The Sea, Blindfold), reggae (Friction) or folk (Over and Over). Still as sensual as ever, Skye Edwards' voice dominates this magical classic from one end to the other. The colossal work by Paul and Ross Godfrey is so impressive due to its truthfulness, its sense of a subdued groove and its impeccable craftsmanship. The two fanatical brothers are known for 2,569 different styles of music, but everything here is miraculously channelled. Instead of moods, it is the songs that are their priority. It’s as though trip hop was entering adulthood by freeing itself from its sometimes-heavy constraints. With the album cover mimicking that of Hi Fi Companion by Ray Conniff and his orchestra, Big Calm transformed the dancefloor into a welcoming no man's land and the neuroses of trip hop into cosy sequences. A real magic trick!

Massive Attack – Mezzanine (1998)
Ten years after their formation, Massive Attack were unbeatable thanks to a truly unique aesthetic and sound. However, with their third album, which was released in 1998, 3D, Daddy G and Mushroom proved that they had not yet finished their transformation… The soul of Bristol's group, still as mysterious as ever, became darker. A poisonous cold wave introduced by 3D seemed to seep into their veins, like on Angel, the unsettling opening theme. Anxiety reached its peak on the dark dub of Risingson. Even the electro-metalloid of Dissolved Girl is an oppressive sequence despite Sarah Jay's elfish voice. On the menacing but sublime Teardrop, it takes over a minute before one hears the fey voice of Liz Fraser, a former member of the Cocteau Twins who also sings on Black Milk and Group Four... Despite the omnipresence of electronic sounds, Mezzanine sounds organic throughout. Upon the release of this fascinating album, in which Tricky didn’t participate, Mushroom jumped ship due to creative differences.

Goldfrapp – Felt Mountain (2000)
When you first hear the whistling on Lovely Head, you’d think it was an unreleased Portishead album. However, with its old ‘60s soundtrack atmosphere carried by a sensual voice, Goldfrapp's debut album was not the clone of Dummy. The DNA of the duo from London composed of Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory was something else. The singer had been sailing in trip hop waters for some time (she shared the microphone with Tricky on Pumpkin on his album Maxinquaye), but with Felt Mountain the cinematographic ambitions she deployed with her multi-instrumentalist partner are of a completely different calibre. This album, released in September 2000, seems to be obsessed with lyricism and the mystery of old music scores written in the ‘60s and ‘70s by Ennio MorriconeJohn BarryLalo SchifrinHenry ManciniFrançois de Roubaix, Krzysztof Komeda and others. Less electronic than their peers, Goldfrapp played the luxury card. There’s nothing depressing on this trip hop album, but instead a kind of letting-go, reinforced by Alison Goldfrapp’s soprano voice and Will Gregory’s dramatic compositions. To watch the film that illustrates Felt Mountain, just close your eyes.
