A great project involving strings from the American jazz saxophonist...

The Underground Orchestra is the name of the latest project from Chris Potter. The latest venture started from the Underground quartet, comprising along with Potter of guitarist Adam Rogers, pianist Craig Taborn and drummer Nate Smith, who were then joined by two bassists, a string quartet and a vibraphone, played with great expertise by virtuoso Steve Nelson. With such a great array of talent at his fingertips, Potter has been able to create something quite magnificent. A dense album with a rare harmonic richness, certain themes, which are at times cinematic in scope, allow the Chicago saxophonist some lyrical and inspired solos. At its most intimate, the conversations and interactions between the musicians come to the fore and the refinement of the composition is evident. From previous experiences, the meeting of jazz and violins tends to be a bit risky; but with Imaginary Cities Chris Potter sits comfortably among the greats such that at times he is not far from the legendary Charlie Parker With Strings and has created the first great album of 2015.
