Hi-Res Booklet
This new album is the second release from the conductor Franz Welser-Möst and his Cleveland Orchestra on Welser-Möst’s own label. It also marks their final performances before their entire tour around Europe and the UAE was cancelled due to coronavirus. This recording took place on March 12, 2020 in front of a few donors and staff members under Ohio’s strict state rules. This feeling permeates Franz Welser-Möst’s rendition of Andante con moto from Schubert’s 9th Symphony and it sounds as though the conductor is conscious of the fact that this would the last time he would be conducting his orchestra for a while. This gives the calm, quiet work a very personal twist. The album also includes a work by Ernst Krenek commissioned for the Swiss patron Paul Sacher in 1972. Static and Extatic consists of ten short movements for chamber orchestra, percussion and piano. They are like musical haikus, each one lasting between one and three minutes. They are written in a serial style and present a retrospective of Ernst Krenek’s compositional technique that he developed throughout his long career. The resulting atmosphere is unexpected, enchanting and truly poetic. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Hi-Res Booklet
"The Forgotten Recordings" features eight historic performances made for the Book-of-the-Month Club in 1954 and 1955 – seven of which are first releases – that have been restored and remastered by the multi-award-winning audio restoration engineer Lani Spahr, who also provides extensive and informative booklet notes. Three works – Bach’s Third Orchestral Suite (BWV 1068), a revealing engagement by Szell with a composer he is not usually associated with, Smetana’s The Moldau and Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegel (with an early spotlight on legendary horn player Myron Bloom) were recorded in mono in a remarkably productive session on Christmas Eve, 1954. From October 1955 in stereo recordings are two works by Brahms – his Haydn Variations and the Academic Festival Overture, two symphonies - Mozart’s No. 39 and Schumann’s Fourth - and a Stravinsky Firebird-Suite that “crackles with energy”. “Here”, says Spahr, “we can appreciate that the orchestra was well on its way to becoming, in Szell’s words, ‘this glorious instrument… that perfectly reflects my musical ideals’.” © SOMM Recordings

The Cleveland Orchestra has been widely applauded among the world’s handful of top orchestras. Having celebrated their 100th year in 2018, the ensemble launches its own recording label for its own second hundred years. The three-part album, featuring three pairs of works, is conducted and curated by Music Director Franz Welser-Möst. The tracks of the new release were all recorded in the acclaimed acoustic of Severance Hall, with the second volume of "A New Century" pairing the world premiere recording of Stromab by the Austrian composer Johannes Maria Staud with Richard Strauss’ earliest — and oft neglected — tone poem Aus Italien. Welser-Möst believes each of these composers was looking both to the past, and forward beyond their own time, bringing a through-line to musical history carried forward by of each new generation of innovation and change. By listening to Strauss and Staud together, we can begin to see how these different channels of thought progressed in the larger river of music’s evolution. ©: Cleveland Orchestra/PIAS
