Stephan Moccio

In his own work and as a songwriter for the stars, Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated composer/songwriter/producer Stephan Moccio crafts reflective tunes with a yearning melodic bent. "A New Day Has Come," a song he co-wrote for Celine Dion, became a cross-Atlantic smash hit in 2002. Moccio built on this success with co-writing credits on songs including the Miley Cyrus chart-topper "Wrecking Ball" (2013) and the Weeknd's "Earned It" (2015). As a solo artist, he adds an introspective flair to his style on albums such as his 2006 debut, Exposure, and 2020's Tales of Solace, a set of meditative piano pieces intended to create an oasis of calm during the turbulent times in which it was released. The equally evocative Lionheart arrived in 2021 and found Moccio drawing inspiration from the paintings of Claude Monet. Born in St. Catharine's, Ontario, Canada, and raised in Niagara Falls, Moccio began studying classical music at the Royal Conservatory of Toronto at the age of three. He went on to study composition and piano performance at Western University. Offered a scholarship to study further at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, he instead chose to pursue his professional career and signed a publishing contract with Sony/ATV Music Publishing at age 22. He ended up composing music for Canadian television shows and a few movies, among other assignments. Overall, he spent eight years at Sony/ATV, where he honed his skills as a songwriter, producer, and arranger. After the success of Celine Dion's "A New Day Has Come" (2002), which was co-penned by Moccio and Aldo Nova, he left the publishing company to start his own, Sing Little Penguin, in 2003. Around the same time, Moccio earned writing credit for "What You Never Know," a Sarah Brightman single taken from her Billboard classical crossover chart-topping album Harem (2003). His other notable songwriting credits over the next few years included, among many others, Randy Bachman's "Our Leaves Are Green Again" (2004), Joshua Payne's "Art of the Heart" (2004), Olivia Newton-John's "Instrument of Peace" (2006), and Josh Groban's "My Heart Was Home Again" (2007). In 2006, Moccio released his full-length album debut, Exposure, a collection of 22 solo piano originals released by the Universal Music Group subsidiary Bijou Records. It reached number ten on Billboard's Canadian Albums chart. Collaborations with the Canadian Tenors (The Perfect Gift) and Mark Masri (La Voce) were among his many projects to see release in 2010, and in 2012, Moccio returned with his second solo album, Elements. It coincided with a stint as a judge on TV's Canada's Got Talent alongside actor Martin Short and soprano Measha Brueggergosman. In 2013, Moccio was part of the writing team for Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball," an international blockbuster that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. Around this time, he moved his home studio to the Los Angeles area. Becoming even more in demand for his melodic skills, Moccio contributed composing, production, arranging, and performances to the Weeknd's 2015 album Beauty Behind the Madness, resulting in three Grammy nominations: Album of the Year, and Best R&B Song and Best Song Written for a Visual Media for "Earned It." The latter recognition came courtesy of the track's inclusion on the soundtrack for that year's Fifty Shades of Grey. "Earned It" also collected an Academy Award nomination for best song for Moccio, the Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye), Belly (Ahmad Balshe), and DaHeala (Jason Quenneville). Among the highlights of Moccio's writing credits in the later part of the decade were songs for Jon Bellion, James Blunt, and Avril Lavigne. Sharing credit with the New Royales, he penned another tune for Celine Dion, this one the title track from her 2019 album Courage. Representing a pursuit of calm and solitude, Moccio's third solo album, Tales of Solace, arrived in 2020. It marked his debut for Decca/Universal and reached number 16 on Billboard's Classical Albums chart. A fourth full-length, Lionheart, followed in June 2021. Recorded at his Laurel Canyon home, the album featured the song "Le Jardin de Monsieur Monet," which was inspired by Claude Monet's famous 1900 painting The Artist's Garden at Giverny.
