Reb Fountain

New Zealand-based singer/songwriter Reb Fountain has slowly built an impressive body of work where her imagery-rich narrative songs are guided by her controlled vocals. Fountain's music doesn't commit to any one genre but explores elements of country, folk, storytelling, singer/songwriter fare, and alternative pop. Her recorded output has also shifted from album to album, with the country tinges of 2006's Like Water giving way to a more varied presentation on visceral and more intensely toned releases like her self-titled 2020 album and its 2021 follow-up Iris. Fountain was born in San Francisco to hippie parents who introduced her to music early on in the form of family singalongs. She spent time in London and the U.S., working for a time as a jazz vocalist before ultimately landing in Auckland, New Zealand. Her early solo work leaned more into twangy indie country than her jazz background, but the sophisticated lyrical currents on albums like 2006's Like Water and 2008's Holster pointed to darker, more mature songwriting. Fountain offered up two releases in 2017, the emotionally raw Hopeful & Hopeless EP and the organically toned album Little Arrows. Her self-titled 2020 LP was released by long-running New Zealand indie label Flying Nun and took another turn toward darker pop sounds. The next year, Fountain returned with Iris, another collection of brooding, powerful songs released again through Flying Nun.
