Pearly Gate Music

Pearly Gate Music is the brainchild of Pacific Northwest singer/songwriter Zach Tillman. The brother of Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty) and an active member of Seattle’s music scene in his own right -- Zach began releasing solo material as PGM in 2010. While he shares the wry lyricism and '70s pop acumen of his older sibling, Zach's songs are more emotionally and sonically elusive. Using his bedroom as a makeshift studio, he recorded Pearly Gate Music's largely lo-fi debut album with his brother’s help, relying on Casio keyboards and acoustic guitars to provide most of the instrumental backing. The self-titled record was released in 2010 on Barsuk. Tillman began work on the follow-up shortly after the LP's release and sent a handful of demos to the late producer and fellow pop provocateur Richard Swift, who signed on to helm the project. On the eve of production, Tillman suffered a "total mental breakdown," citing the immense pressure of being a frontman, among other things, as the cause. He returned to the project years later, working with longtime friend and collaborator Daniel Hindman behind the board. The resulting Mainly Gestalt Pornography, which adopted a more refined and polished sound and reflected a newfound sense of hard-won positivity, was released in 2021 via Bella Union.
