John

Sounding as if they could fall apart at any minute, South London duo JOHN have crafted an intense mix of Mclusky-esque indie noise rock that first made a splash with the release of their debut album, 2017's God Speed in the National Limit. Formed in 2013 by vocalist and drummer John Newton and guitarist John Healy after meeting at university, the duo had originally formed a friendship bond over shared musical inspirations, such as Mclusky, Rocket from the Crypt, and Metz, before starting the group. Taking their name from their forenames -- with it sometimes being stylized as JOHN (TWOTIMES) -- the South London pair quickly made a name for themselves on the live circuit with their incendiary live performances. JOHN released their self-titled debut EP in 2014, and two more singles followed before they issued their debut album, 2017's God Speed in the National Limit. Dates with IDLES, Pulled Apart by Horses, and Part Chimp followed, while their sound was brought to a wider audience after being championed by BBC DJ Steve Lamacq as well U.S. radio station KEXP. Writing new material while touring, the duo returned to the studio in 2019 with Wayne Adams at his London-based Bear Bites Horse studios to record their sophomore album. Preceded by the singles "Future Thinker" and "High Digger," the record saw them working with the likes of Chrome Hoof's Chloe Harrington as well as vocalist Rosanna Dean. The resulting album, Out Here on the Fringes, was issued towards the end of 2019. The album saw them embark on a massive European tour, which was cut short by the 2020 pandemic. With some unexpected extra time on their hands, they began to write album three, bringing Adams back into the fold alongside the inclusion of mastering engineer Sarah Register (Protomartyr, Future Islands). Together they delivered 2021's Nocturnal Manoeuvres, which captured their infamously blistering live performances.
