Between Black Star Riders, tribute tours under the name Thin Lizzy, his solo albums and the “troubleshooting” he does left and right with his friends (including Stiff Little Fingers), Ricky Warwick is one very busy man. As such, When Life Was Hard & Fast feels more like a labour of love intended to shift away from contractual obligations, as the man freewheels through 11 tracks (and almost as many bonus songs on this version). Constantly swerving between rock, hard rock and even punk, the Scottish musician reviews his loves with a constant concern for immediacy (the cover of Gunslinger by Mink DeVille and Never Corner a Rat are perfect examples). Of course, for good measure, acoustic ballads are prominent, including the very pretty Time Don't Seem to Matter, enhanced with backing vocals by Pepper Warwick, the musician’s 11-year-old daughter. Some tracks feel a little like filler (Fighting Heart, You Don't Love Me, I Don't Feel At Home...), obvious and reminiscent of previous songs, but nothing about this album is ever burdensome or boring. Quickly counterbalanced by polemics like Still Alive (which could suit a Danko Jones album), these “easier” songs ultimately fly by. The bonus covers are more astounding since we witness Warwick trying out, among other things, unexpected acoustic versions, including You Spin me Round (Like a Record) by Dead Or Alive, Oops !... I Did it Again by Britney Spears, and the incomparable and perfectly realised Wrathchild by Iron Maiden! It’s the perfect ending to recreation to end this limited edition of When Life Was Hard & Fast, a brilliant moment spent in the company of a true artist with rock'n'roll tattooed on his heart, and who only sings what speaks to and from his soul. © Charlélie Arnaud/Qobuz
