The group's first album is basically a reflection of their early repertoire and very heavy on the R&B/soul standards. Dominated by covers of Ike & Tina Turner, the Coasters, John Lee Hooker, Little Walter, Brenda Holloway, and others, only three of the tunes are original. Two of these are written by Stevie Winwood, the other by Spencer Davis; Winwood's mid-tempo soul number "It Hurts Me So" is easily the best of them. Winwood is in fine voice and the group is energetic, but this is neither as good as their best work nor nearly as good as the best British R&B albums of the era by competitors like Them and the Rolling Stones. Includes their first two British singles, "Dimples" and "I Can't Stand It."

In your panoramas...
Diabolus in Musica: 50 Years of Black Sabbath

In the autumn of 1969, four young lads from Birmingham crammed themselves into a studio in London for what looked like their last chance at making a career in music. They had 24 hours to record and to change their lives forever. They left the studio with “Black Sabbath” an eponymous debut album from the band led by Ozzy Osbourne and guitarist Tommy Iommi that would turn a whole generation onto heavy metal. Let's look back on this sonic revolution.

My Bloody Valentine, the Inner Experience

Thirty years after its release, My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" remains the craziest album of the 90s. This electric monument in the form of a wall of sound was a product of Kevin Shields' deranged mind. It turned the history of rock upside down and remains a major source of inspiration for many musicians from all walks of life.

Britpop in 10 Albums

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.
