Jonah Yano’s success story began following his crucial meeting with Alex Sowinski from the jazz group BadBadNotGood, well known for their collaborations with rap heavyweights (Tyler, The Creator, Kendrick Lamar, Mick Jenkins). Yano befriended him after a concert by MONEYPHONE - a Toronto based indie pop duo, who collaborated with him on the track ‘On Lock’ (2018). He had been tinkering with software, recording with his phone and working on his voice ever since moving to Toronto in 2016—this was his opportunity to get his first demo heard. What followed was a dream come true. The drummer and the rest of BBNG would collaborate with him on the lead track from his EP nervous, and again on his first full length, souvenir: a showcase of velvety, minimalist R&B, through which the Hiroshima native calls upon buried trauma and his dual identity (his roots in Canada and Japan), and where he sings to his estranged father (on ‘shoes’).

Co-produced and arranged by BBNG, his sophomore album, portrait of a dog, is of a similarly intimate nature. It sees him work through his Japanese-Canadian identity and his familial relationships, while moving into much more constructed musical territory, where his voice ends up taking a back seat. In creating these hazy atmospheres, it provides the necessary space for soulful jazz orchestrations—steered by BBNG—to develop clearly. Leland Whitty switches between electric guitar, violin, saxophone, and viola, while Alexander Sowinski handles all the drums and Chester Hansen plays bass. The strings, which are particularly present throughout, are jointly arranged by Whitty and Toronto-based multi-instrumentalist Eliza Niemi (who plays the cello here). A little bonus feature comes in the form of Yano’s cover of the British folk-psych priestess, Vashti Bunyan’s ‘Glow Worms’: a groovy, sensual reimagining, where Whitty’s guitar and Hansen’s bass are given free rein.
