Now That the Light Is Fading is the first major-label release from Maggie Rogers, a modern singer/songwriter who first started releasing indie digital EPs back in 2012. This EP arrives five years later, which may be why it seems eerily assured. Unlike many debuts, Rogers isn't stumbling through either her songs or sound. These five songs -- all anchored in atmospheric electronics -- are assured, tightly constructed compositions graced with glassy electronics. Rogers' vocals wind up giving these otherwise icy productions some warmth, and if the five songs all adhere to a general aesthetic, they're also varied. "Color Song" is a tone poem, "Alaska" feels as intimate as a straight folk song, "On + Off" percolates with a distinct claustrophobic rhythm, "Dog Years" is as stylish as Elle Goulding, and "Better" is a bittersweet denouement. All combined, this adds up to a rich and impressive official debut.

Britpop in 10 Albums

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.

And then Nirvana Killed Rock

In 1987, Nirvana was born: the most unexpected punk swerve of the end of the 20th century. A rocketing career, international hits, hordes of fans and a tragic epilogue for this worldwide phenomenon. And what if Kurt Cobain’s band was none other than the last band in the history of rock? The ultimate generational phenomenon of genre, if not its last myth.

Nick Cave: Bad Seed

Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds remain one of the most prolific adventures of the post-punk era. Since the late 1980s, the vast magnetism of the Australian singer has swirled through violent paroxysms, fulminating covers, piano ballads and sweaty rock'n'roll. As the years went by, Cave became more and more of a crooner, part way between a punk Frank Sinatra and an austere Johnny Cash.
