Despite the fact that Love Over Gold contains only five songs, the powerful effect of these selections makes this Dire Straits' most underrated record. Building on the ambitious arrangements and more sophisticated story-songs that made up the prior Making Movies, Mark Knopfler audaciously composed "Telegraph Road," a near-15-minute cut that traces society's technological evolution. Although this kind of subject matter might sound ostensibly dry, Knopfler's crisp playing and warm raspy voice, combined with Alan Clark's gorgeous keyboard runs, makes for a sweeping experience. Elsewhere, Knopfler uses the satirical romp "Industrial Disease" to turn a lesson on international economics and bureaucratic red tape into an infectious shuffle. Rounding out this unusual pop album are the atmospheric, piano-driven title track, the ominously film noir-flavored "Private Investigations," and "It Never Rains," the story of a hard-luck lover that comes off with an optimistic air thanks to Clark's pulsing organ playing and Knopfler's robust delivery.

In your panoramas...
Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits: A Love-Hate Relationship

On 14 April 2018, Dire Straits were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Even Mark Knopfler seemed touched by this honour, hoping to be handed the award by the likes of Bob Dylan or Eric Clapton. But in the end, Dire Straits moved into the pantheon of rockers without their star, which made for one of the saddest ceremonies in history. The absence was almost symbolic of the relationship between the lead singer and his group.

And then Nirvana Killed Rock

In 1987, Nirvana was born: the most unexpected punk swerve of the end of the 20th century. A rocketing career, international hits, hordes of fans and a tragic epilogue for this worldwide phenomenon. And what if Kurt Cobain’s band was none other than the last band in the history of rock? The ultimate generational phenomenon of genre, if not its last myth.

10 Legends of the Blues

June 21 marked 20 years since the death of a king of the blues: John Lee Hooker. But the blues didn't follow this giant into the grave. This genre, which has been being recorded for over a century, is still nourishing pop music of all kinds and producing great records (like the latest release from The Black Keys). It's time to take a look back at the classics with ten historic blues musicians.
