Better known for his guitar playing and skills as an accompanist than for his own songs, Neal Casal took his own life in August 2019 at the age of just 50. It is the lesser-known side of the songwriter that many musicians have decided to celebrate in an impressive triple tribute album with a well-chosen cast. On Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal, we meet big names (Steve Earle, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, Shooter Jennings, J Mascis, Warren Haynes, Bob Weir) as well as promising young talents (Jaime Wyatt, Dori Freeman, Aaron Lee Tasjan), all gathered to (re)discover Casal's work but also to show off its eclectic range. Now, there may be no electro-zouk or trap here, but it would be wrong to see his music as nothing more than plain Americana or pastiches of his two favourite bands, the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead. Because even though he did work a lot with Ryan Adams and on occasion with Willie Nelson, Neal Casal also worked with people like Rufus Wainwright or Sheryl Crow...
